Have you found yourself asking...

How do I give my landlord notice? Here's how to end your tenancy.

With the changes in the Renters Rights bill, all tenancy agreements will be moved from fixed terms to periodic. This means all contracts are on a month-by-month basis. So a tenant can give notice to leave at any time - as long as they are following the law.

Although it might not yet be updated for the renters reform (unless you're from the future!) Shelter's guide on how to give notice on a periodic tenancy is pretty accurate to how all tenants will need to give notice.

How much notice do I need to give my landlord?

Outside of the lack of fixed terms, this is the 2nd biggest change with the Renters Reform. Instead of giving your Landlord 1 month notice - in line with your contract date - you now need to give 2 months notice.

So, say you move into a property on the 12th of January.

You want to vacate in October. So you need to give notice to leave on the 11th of October, on (or before) the 12th of August.

If you give it after that, you might be stuck in your agreement until the 12th of November - unless your Landlord / Agent agrees to let you leave earlier.
